The sweet stories, important life lessons, and amazing art of Eric Carle always bring a smile to my face. Whether I am snuggled in a chair with my littlest one reading him The Very Hungry Caterpillar, or listening to my oldest child playing school with her siblings and reading them The Grouchy Ladybug, Eric Carle continues to inspire me.
So when the technology teacher, drama teacher, and I decided to create a collaborative lesson on digital fables, we knew Eric Carle and his brightly colored illustrations would be the perfect fit. His collage style was a great way to blend traditional art-making with 21st century skills.
We started the project by gathering all the fifth grade students together for an assembly to "hook" them into the lesson. Students learned that they would be writing and performing original fables in drama and creating illustrations for their fables in art class based on Eric Carle's collage technique. Continuing in art alongside our technology teacher, students would then photograph their illustrations to upload into iMovie, Book Creator or Explain Everything on their iPad to create a digital story, including audio.
I've embedded the finished YouTube examples where students used iMovie and the Explain Everything app on the iPad to create them. The other examples created using the Book Creator app and turned into mov. files using Reflector can be found by clicking here on 5th Grade Fables 2014.
