Modern Masterpieces

This binder assignment, Modern Masterpiece, might just be one of my all-time favorites. I love to see the many ways my students choose to modernize a famous painting. From tattooing the Mona Lisa, to aliens invading Edvard Munch's, The Scream, these drawings are sure to impress you! Enjoy!

Recycle the Roll

Many of us never look twice at the small cardboard roll sitting empty on the plastic tube in our bathrooms. It may become a source of frustration, and then it is easily tossed into the trash once the fresh roll is replaced.   This is not the case in my house.  In my house, my three lovely children keep watch for when the tube is about to go empty, and lay claim to the one almost finished in the upstairs bathroom or the one running low on the paper towel dispenser.  They call first dibs, call each other out on who got the last one, and on occasion, end up in tears all over this tiny cardboard roll.  Why all the fuss?  It's the key to creativity, construction and countless hours of  imaginary play.  From a pirate spy glass to intricate puppets, these rolls are a hot commodity in my house.

Thus, the inspiration for the final binder assignment of the third quarter.  I was super impressed with all the amazing ideas that entered the art room.  Enjoy this Smilebox of "Recycle the Roll!"

All About the Oscars!

If you haven't had quite enough of the Oscars, take a moment to check out the latest Middle School art binder assignment,  "All About the Oscars."  Students could choose their own adventure and create a drawing based on film, fashion or famous faces!  Students could create a movie poster about their favorite movie of all times, design an Oscar-worthy outfit, or capture the face of a famous movie star!  It was great to see so much variety for this assignment!
Enjoy!

An Award Winning Weekend!

It's hard to believe we've reached our mid-winter break!  This time of year seems to come so fast, and with it, the excitement of the annual Scholastic Art Awards Ceremony held at the Milwaukee Art Museum.  I was once again fortunate enough to have a student recognized for her talent and hard work in the visual arts!  Maia, earned a Silver Key for her fabulous plaster cast sculpture entitled Trying.  I love that she pushed the boundaries of this assignment and challenged herself to try something new and different.  She was so excited to receive this honor, and to see her work on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum.  Well done, Maia!

The Superior Selfie

It's only a few weeks into the new year, and clearly, my resolution to keep up with my blog, isn't going as well as I had hoped! Oh well, better late, than never, right?!
I hope you enjoy the last art binder assignment of the first semester, "The Superior Selfie."  These selfie's depict a whole different side of our Middle School artists!  There were so many exciting images to choose from, it was hard to decide which ones to include, so this Smilebox is a bit longer to view, but definitely worth every minute.
Enjoy!
