Bowls, bowls and more bowls!

This past Sunday, I participated in my first ever Empty Bowls event here in Milwaukee at the MSOE Kern Center. Wow, what an amazing experience!  I was so impressed with it all, from the beautifully hand-crafted bowls to the great variety of tasty soups and the student-led musical performances! It was so rewarding to see bowls created by my students sitting on tables just waiting to be chosen, or already in the hands of people excited with their selection. I also loved the opportunity to search through tables of bowls, turning them upside down to see the artist's name scratched in the bottom and looking for one that was just right for me.  After selecting and purchasing my bowl, I headed to the washing station and then over to the room filled with music, soups, breads, and tables full of smiling faces.  I tasted two delicious soups, steak, swiss cheese and mushroom soup and spicy spinach tortilla. Yummy!!!   The best part of the day, however,  was knowing that this whole process is being done to help the hungry in our own Milwaukee community and that our simple hand-made creations can help to impact others in such a powerful way. My only regret of the day, was that my whole family wasn't with me to participate in such a worthy cause.
I will definitely begin my sixth grade curriculum again next year making bowls for this event and teaching my students the value of serving others through the process of making art.  I will also make sure my whole family shares in this day with me!
